 Exercising with Fibromyalgia

Exercising with fibromyalgia is a simple way to get stronger and firmer and to reduce the related pain. Exercise will help to improve the mobility of muscle fibers and increase the oxygen flow in the muscles especially for those with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).

It has been proven beyond any doubt that aerobic and muscle exercises are an effective treatment in FMS. A mere 20 weeks of cardio vascular exercises will have a greater improvement in fitness and pain thresholds. One strength training intervention found good improvement in getting rid of the pain and improving overall functioning. Significant results were obtained in those who regularly performed aerobic exercises compared to non-exercising people, especially patients with FMS. Patients with FMS have routinely confirmed this.

Though numerous modalities are available in the present day to reduce pain, such as electrotherapy, cryotherapy etc, patients need to be taught how to use a particular therapy. It is recommended that a particular exercise, if practiced regularly, will help to decrease stiffness and pain in the muscles.

Aerobic and flexibility exercises are also essential for rehabilitation. To begin exercising with fibromyalgia, you have to begin with a gentle warm up and slowly proceed to stretch the major muscle groups. The process should involve a period of 4-5 times in a week of 20-30 minutes each. The beginner will no doubt find the exercise difficult in the short run, but will definitely realize the benefits in the long run. People who start off exercising often complain of pain but will be surprised how quickly their body adapts and reacts to the new movements.

You can also practice an alternative method called undulation. It'll  help you to be more active and reduce the symptoms so that you can move, bend and stretch easily without any pain. One should never think that doing an exercise is uncomfortable and unhelpful. If you do it regularly and gently, you'll build the strength and flexibility. The fundamental idea of an exercise is to develop strength by increasing strain in the body. Small fluid movements will help your muscles and tissues to flush out waste and attract nutrients. Gentle and regular movements of core muscles will help them to be more pliable and also simultaneously to get rid of pain.

So don’t ever complain of having to exercise with fibromyalgia. It’s a very good way of getting yourself rid of fibromyalgia syndrome and the related pain.

Fact
Doctors - The best doctor to see is one who has lots of experience treating fibromyalgia patients. There is no specific medical specialty that "owns" this condition, so it is important to inquire about a physician’s level of experience and their general philosophy for treating fibromyalgia.
